When Lacey Buchanan and her husband Charles learned they were expecting their first child, they appeared to be floating on clouds.
But their good fortune was fleeting. Things took a dramatic turn at the scan, which was performed in week 18 of the pregnancy.
However, there was no way for the pair to be ready for what was to come.
Lacey and Charles learned they were expecting a child in 2010. They were ecstatic yet also somewhat surprised.
Unfortunately, soon after, they would get some news that would completely upend the pair.
The physicians found that Christian, their child, would probably be born with numerous facial deformities.
Despite the probable difficulties, 23-year-old Lacey, a believer, had already fallen in love with her unborn child in 2010.
There was never a choice to abort.
Doctors still didn’t know if her kid would survive as his due date drew near.
As a result, they performed a Caesarean section to deliver Christian in February 2011 in case he was unable to breathe on his own.
After giving delivery, Lacey was overjoyed, so hearing Christian’s first scream was like music to her ears.
Everything looked to have gone off fairly smoothly.
No one responded when the anxious mother asked the medical staff what her son looked like.
After asking Lacey if she wanted to see him, they briefly held him up above a curtain.
Christian was wrapped in a blanket and had gauze over his eyes when Lacey held him for the first time. She had barely had a glimpse of her newborn son.
Even though Lacey was aware of his cleft lip, palate, and other birth defects, she still thought her son was perfect.
Lacey finally grasped the gravity of the circumstance. Where his eyes should have been, Christian was nothing more than skin and bones.
Her cherished child was born without eyes.
Charles, Lacey’s husband, broke down in tears four days later.
Charles reportedly reported that a doctor had entered and essentially told, “Your child is blind, and there’s nothing we can do,” according to Lacey, who spoke to USA Today.
Both parents were taken aback by the physician’s diagnosis. They were unsure of their thoughts.
“They did not wait for me, and we did not inquire. Nothing,” says Lacey.
Christian, now 5 years old, defied all chances, and his extraordinary story has motivated countless people.
Four days after his birth, Christian underwent his first significant operation, and he still has a long way to go.
For the family, the initial surgery was quite challenging.
“Things were difficult when we brought him home from the hospital. Every time I took Christian out in public, onlookers would ogle him and murmur, “Look at that baby,” behind my back, Lacey told the Daily Mail.
People reportedly told Lacey “was a disgusting person for not aborting Christian” in front of her!
Her marriage to Charles, whom she met when she was only 15 years old, suffered emotionally as a result of the difficulties of caring for Christian.
Christian had undergone seven significant operations by the time he was 4 years old, including procedures to repair his jaw and cleft palate.
Lacey and Charles contemplated separation when things were at their worst. However, with the help of marriage counseling and the love and support of their loved ones and friends, they managed to get back together.
How delightful to hear!
Christian has always been a source of inspiration and a bright spot in Lacey’s life.
She probably wouldn’t be able to maintain anything and develop without him.
There were numerous occasions when Lacey just wanted to give up since it was the simpler course of action, she recalls. However, Christian continues to get up every day, happy and prepared to face the world and do whatever it takes to be successful and happy.
Over time, Christian will require other surgeries, and it is unclear what his future will hold.
However, he is now studying reading at a school for the blind.
Christian has recently been taking karate training and has shown considerable talent in this area. Oh, and he’s a violinist as well. Talk about refusing to accept limitations placed on him!
You can achieve anything you can dream of!
As I read about Lacey, Christian, and Charles’ journey, I’m appreciative of what I have and also moved by the fortitude and bravery of a young child.
