A 10-year-old girl’s ‘Code Word’ thwarted a kidnapping attempt, and officials are urging families to pay attention.
A man in a white SUV approached the young girl and her buddy while they were walking around a neighborhood park.
The man then said that her siblings were involved in a terrible car accident and that she had no choice but to accompany him.
The girl, who was already prepared, then asked the stranger what the “code word” was, to which the stranger had no response. The stranger then left as a result of this.
The use of code words to determine whether a stranger – or even a close relative – was sent by a child’s parents is not a new concept.
However, despite those concerned about children’s safety, the practice hasn’t taken off.
It’s also simple to set up: choose a difficult-to-guess term and have the youngster ask for it anytime another adult claims to be bringing them up on their parents’ behalf.
Then, either change the code word or have it changed regularly.
Given how dangerous anyone can be these days, discussing and implementing a system like this with your children may well save their lives, as it did for this little girl.
The world is becoming increasingly dangerous. Even without including the numerous tragedies that can already occur due to pure poor luck and Mother Nature taking her course, there are just too many factors beyond our control.
As a result, our ability to safeguard our safety is severely limited – especially when it comes to the safety of our children. As a result, the only way to protect our children while away from us is to arm them with the knowledge they will need to recognize a scenario and respond appropriately.
