In the controversy over whether women should publicly nurse or practice “discretion,” a breastfeeding mother’s funny retort to a judgy stranger who asked her to “cover up” has become legendary. Melanie Dudley was breastfeeding her 3-month-old kid in the corner of a Cabo San Lucas restaurant when a stranger requested her to cover up. Dudley, who had her back to the other diners, told TODAY that the man’s demand left her stunned. Rather than argue with him verbally, the mother of three decided to practically throw a blanket over her head and face.

“I was on vacation with my complete family in Cabo San Lucas when a man urged me to cover myself,” the Texas mother told Yahoo Lifestyle. “Normally, I keep my presence to myself, but we were sitting in the back of the restaurant.” Dudley admitted that she had used a nursing cover at first, but it was too hot for her infant. “I had the cover on, but it was unbearably hot. It was around 95 degrees outside, and my small kid was sweating profusely “She recalled something. “‘You know what?’ I said. ‘I’m on vacation, therefore I’m going to take this off.'”

Dudley recalled being “sort of startled” for a second after hearing the man’s demand before having an idea and asking her husband to pass her the nursing cover. “I simply wore it over my head. I’m not sure why, “she stated “It wasn’t like it was a macho brawl or something. That was all I had to say. I couldn’t think of anything to say, so I decided to hide my head.” Her husband captured the amusing event on camera and afterwards sent it to his mother, who shared it on Facebook. Carol Lockwood, one of her friends, published it on her Facebook with her permission, and it quickly went viral, garnering over 137k likes and 225k shares.

Why is this a problem for people? She’s FEEDING her child! Each to their own. If you don’t like it, STOP LOOKING!!!!! You’ve got nothing to do with it!

“While nursing her infant, a friend’s daughter-in-law was advised to ‘cover up,’ so she did! I’ve never met her, but she’s fantastic!!! I’ve made this post public with permission since I’m sick of people condemning women for nursing!!! PS: To dispel rumours, she was ordered to cover up by a man, the temperature was 90 degrees and extremely humid, and she wasn’t in a Muslim country insulting customs “The now-viral photo was captioned by Lockwood.

Dudley, who also has 4-year-old twins, claimed that when she nursing in public, she attempts to hide. She admitted that she breastfed her older boys for a year “When we were out, it was hard to do both at the same time, therefore I never had this problem. It’s so much easier to nurse in public with my little one.” She was taken aback by the overwhelming response to the photo on the internet, and she expressed her amazement. Although she has received a few harsh comments, she claims that the majority of them — notably those from Europeans — have been encouraging.

“I can’t believe what I’m hearing. To me, it’s incredible “Dudley remarked. “If there’s a greater lesson here, it’s to just be supportive,” says the author. She went on to say that while numerous individuals who were uncomfortable with public nursing advised her nurse in the restroom, she wasn’t keen on the notion. She remarked, “That’s not very hygienic.” Dudley now hopes that her story will inspire other nursing mothers. “I’m hoping the enthusiasm continues to build. Let’s show our support for ladies who want to breastfeed in public, whether with or without a cover “she stated “Just do your thing, I mean. It isn’t causing any harm to anyone.”
