Man gets custody of 3-month-old son, only to use him as punch bag until he dies – rest in peace

Perhaps none of the world’s bad crimes – and the evil people willing to commit them – shock and outrage as much as violence against an innocent child.

The concept of harming one’s own child is so far removed from reality for the typical person that it is unthinkable. And yet, for reasons most of us will never understand, there are monsters out there who have it in them to harm helpless children.

One such creature is Isaac Hernandez. He was sentenced to 27 years in prison in 2017 for killing his own infant son, Sylys Hernandez, who was just three months old at the time.

After the baby’s death, an autopsy revealed that he had 26 rib fractures, four-leg fractures, mouth and lip injuries, and considerable bruising.

He was discovered dead in his crib in his Nampa, Idaho, home, subjected to heinous torture by his father.

Sylys’ death could have been avoided is possibly the most disturbing aspect of her demise. According to reports, Susan Dwello, programme manager for child and family services in Region 3 of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, received an anonymous complaint of the baby being shaken and mistreated.

In one case, child protective services conducted an investigation but found no evidence of wrongdoing.

“The challenge with (anonymous complaints) is that if the department needs to go back or seek further information or other ideas regarding who could have more information, we wouldn’t be able to do that with an anonymous call,” Dwello added.

Sylys had been visited by a doctor five days before the worker’s visit, according to reports at the time. There were no concerns when medical records revealed that the baby appeared to be acquiring acceptable weight for his age, and the issue was closed.

The state did not need to re-evaluate the case because no new complaints had been filed with child and family services, according to Dwello.

Despite this, the infant was in grave danger and died due to his father, Isaac Hernandez, inflicting long-term, violent maltreatment.

Isaac later pled guilty to three counts of felony injury to his child but avoided being charged with murder because the infant’s cause of death could not be ascertained.

Sylys’ death, while tragic, is far from unique. This tragedy reminds me hauntingly of the case of Gabriel Fernandez, an 8-year-old kid who died in May 2013.

Gabriel’s mother and her boyfriend were later found guilty of torturing and murdering him, with evidence at trial indicating that he had been beaten and tortured for a long time.

Prosecutors say four social workers, Stefanie Rodriguez, 35, Patricia Clement, 69, and supervisors Kevin Bom, 41, and Gregory Merritt, 64, failed to protect Gabriel and were charged with one felony count of child abuse and one felony count of fabricating public records.

I don’t know about you, but incidents of child maltreatment like these break my heart. There is no justification for killing an innocent child, boy or girl.

Sylys and Gabriel, may you rest in peace; we trust you’re now secure in the Lord’s arms.
