We are said to be the sum of our choices. While some of us are lucky, others are not so fortunate. In any case, both the negative and positive aspects of our personalities shape who we become. If you’re still unsure about who you are or what you want to be, don’t worry; you’ll figure it out someday. Even the tiniest actions can have far-reaching and long-term repercussions in our life. After reading about this young couple who wound up buying a Scottish mansion by accident, we think we can persuade you.
Claire Segeren and Cal Hunter are a couple of young people who adore one other. They spent the entire year together when Claire decided to take a year out from medical school. They decided to buy a property at an auction, but only after conducting extensive study and examining potential properties. Cal then went on to place a bid on their dream home. Instead, he was handed a 120-year-old manor after winning the auction!
Bid that is incorrect
They were looking to buy an apartment in Pollokshields, Glasgow, despite the fact that neither of them was Scottish. Because the property had been damaged by fire, they knew there would be a lot of work ahead of them. It was expected that fixing it would take six months, but the wait was well worth it. When Cal stopped by the auction house, Claire went home for a visit.
He put an offer on the home and was pleased when his £ 30,000 price was accepted. His elation turned to dread when he learnt the house he had bid on was being sold in three lots! It turns out he has another property. It was a 120-year-old mansion in the Scottish town of Dunoon.
Taking it in stride
When Cal heard “all sales are final,” he knew he’d made a mistake. He inhaled deeply and dialled his girlfriend’s phone number in Canada, where she was visiting her relatives. Imagine telling your partner you paid $39,400 for a home you didn’t want. She did not grow enraged, which was surprising.
Worse Could Happen
They chose to refurbish the house they purchased because the price they paid for it was not extravagant. She told him that it wouldn’t be an issue. Cal’s father was standing right next to her when she called, and he consented. “What could possibly go wrong?” he wondered. They were about to find out everything there was to know about their new home.
Cal learned the name of the mansion at the auction: Jameswood Villa. “Full updating throughout” was claimed to be required. He came upon a 2010 Google Streetview photo. These two were up for a challenge, despite the fact that the area was no longer in its prime.
But It’s Not Perfect
Because they had to look up Dunoon on a map to figure out where their new home was, Claire was Canadian and Cal was English. They were relieved to discover that Glasgow was only a short distance away. Claire was intending to attend Glasgow University’s medical school, so this was excellent for them. The first shock had worn off, and the young couple felt optimistic about their circumstances.
Advertisement that is misleading
They were both cautiously excited about their new venture. Cal went to Dunoon to view the house they had bought at the auction. They were disappointed as soon as they got at the location because the photo was outdated.
To The Core Rotten
Meanwhile, the roof, complete with gaping holes, had arrived. The majority of the lumber had rotted away, indicating that no one had lived in the mansion for the last twenty years. Apart from that, they knew they’d have to rebuild the plumbing and the electrical system. Their new “derelict house” wasn’t supposed to be as hazardous and run-down as it was.
Furthermore, the “leaning, collapsing front wall” was slanted in such a way that it was hidden, signalling serious structural problems. The house was later revealed to be sinking into the ground. There was no denying the difficulty of this site.
Optimistic and resolute
Cal and Claire were not about to give up despite the challenges. They journeyed across England and stumbled across numerous abandoned structures. They were excited to transform it into a beautiful house. Despite the fact that James wood proved to be more difficult to flip than they had anticipated, they were undeterred. It made them extremely happy! These two are quite the risk-takers!
A Call to Action
When they realised they didn’t have enough money to finish the job, they were shocked. They realised they’d have to think outside the box to fund this project. They would have to not only complete the repairs themselves, but also adapt their lifestyle. They would have to quit paying rent or mortgage in addition to undertaking all of the work.
Life in a Caravan
They had to give up a lot of things and go all-in if they wanted to do this. That’s precisely what they’ve accomplished. They both got down to business and pulled up their sleeves. They expected to be homeless for the duration of the project, so they rented a caravan and parked it in the garden of the property.
Issues That Can Be Handled
Because this issue has yet to be settled, they will make their home in the caravan, despite the lack of electricity and running water. They may get by with candles and requesting permission to use their neighbours’ oven and shower.
Couple with a sense of adventure
These two young people stated, “Determined to make life an adventure.” It appears that they have everything they want! They were willing to put their trust in the hand in front of them. After all, it was fate that brought them together in the first place.
How Did They Meet?
You’re probably wondering how this Englishman and this Canadian first met. According to stories, their first encounter took place in the French Alps. During the ski season, they met and got along swimmingly. They subsequently were engaged, embarked on a cross-European road trip, and spent the summer in Canada. The rest, as the saying goes, is history!
They Have Their Own Blog
To keep track of their renovation efforts, the couple decided to launch a blog and an Instagram profile. The pair enjoyed documenting their journey even more because it was a difficult refurbishment.
What have we accomplished?
“What have we done?” is a joke. “What Have We Dunoon?” was the clever title chosen by the two. This is a unique perspective on how the project got started and where their land was placed. Isn’t that a clever wordplay?
They update on a regular basis so that their followers and fans can join them in applauding the small victories, such as constructing the electrical grid or maintaining the plumbing system. There are, of course, tea breaks! After all, they are in the United Kingdom. The pair recently posted this photo on Instagram, thanking their fans for helping them reach the milestone of 100K followers!
The two had no choice but to devote their full selves to the endeavour, as previously indicated. They did recruit the help of a handful of their acquaintances. For example, they were given aid in cleaning up the filth on the walkway.
Making It Happen
Because they had so many other things to do, they continued to take this work for granted. It was fantastic that their friend was willing to assist them. Claire has been working full-time on the project, while Cal supplements their income by working part-time as a carpenter.
Left and right setbacks
Because of the amount of work required, there was little doubt that the task they were undertaking was big. The two have had a number of challenges since the project began in November 2018. Cal said, “Finding a new problem appears to be a daily occurrence.”
Installations Done Yourself
When the work vehicle became bogged in the mud, the two of them decided to construct their own driveway. To find it, they had to dig up the water source, which proved to be more difficult than expected. It took five months to find a wire that would allow them to power the grid!
As if that were a paradox
They had one more issue that would attract writer Joseph Heller’s curiosity. Because the current roof had enough holes to pass for a Swiss cheese slice, the mansion needed a new one. They were, however, completely oblivious that there was a problem.
The fact that they were never completely alone in the effort was fortunate. Their buddies weren’t the only ones who stepped in to help them. Cal and Claire are also supporters of the local community in town! Some of the young couple’s neighbours believed they could share their showers and ovens with them, so we talked about it. They could, however, assist in other ways.
I’m in a rut.
Because the walls were far too unstable, they did not appear to be strong enough to sustain a new roof. They needed to restore the walls, but without a roof, the rain would just wash them away. Cal described the issue as “a giant catch-22 jigsaw puzzle.”
“The compassion of the people of Dunoon has overwhelmed us,” Cal stated. The residents have always been welcoming and supportive, even if some thought they were crazy for doing this. What a beautiful community they live in! Claire and Cal set up a GoFundMe page to seek funds for their project, which anybody may contribute to, including family, friends, and strangers.
Near and far, there is support
Many others have reached out to Claire and Cal via their blog. Their supporters were constantly there for these two, offering technical guidance and directing them to the appropriate materials. Not only that, but the emigrating couple met a lot of people who assisted them with their renovation. 4-5 people show up every day to assist in any way they can.
Project that is environmentally friendly
In addition to their practical budgetary concerns, Cal and Claire sought to make this renovation project as environmentally friendly as possible. In this way, they’ve chosen to build with salvaged materials. They’ll take wood, flooring, kitchen cabinets, and just about anything else you can think of! They’ll use whatever they can get their hands on!
Jameswoods Villa, a fixer-upper, was intended to educate these lovebirds more than just some essential skills. It was also a means for Claire to put their relationship to the test. What could they lose by living in a caravan on the construction site, after all? This was her point of view. She was an eternal optimist who always saw the silver lining in every situation. “It’s a long way off,” Claire conceded, “but it’s there.”
Their ultimate goal
When starting a project of this magnitude, everything, especially the end aim, should be meticulously prepared. After all, you need to make sure you know what you’ll be working on so you don’t waste time. Fortunately, this did not pose an issue for the young couple.
Plans for the Future
They both expected the property to be totally renovated when they put down their tools. They also plan to divide it into three different units. They plan to sell two of them, pay off their debts with the cash, and then live in the remaining one.
As you can see, having a good viewpoint is essential. When they realised they had paid for the wrong house, it would have been simple to lose hope. We can all agree that that was a colossal blunder. Cal and Claire, on the other hand, choose to call it a “happy accident.” Given that time cannot be turned back, why not make the most of it?
There’s no need to linger.
They recognised that life was one big adventure, even if it wasn’t what they had planned. That’s the way they handled things, and we appreciate that. They didn’t want to remain hopeless when there was still time to change things around. We doubt we’d be able to do what these two young people did, and we’re sure many others do, too! Cal and Claire approach life with a smile and a strong attitude!
The dangers and advantages must be weighed, just like anything else in life. The risks of the undertaking were obvious from the start. Who knows, perhaps they squandered their hard-earned cash when they purchased it. Furthermore, the refurbishment may result in even more losses. To say the least, that was a major risk.
However, they believe that the rewards in this case exceed the negatives. They would not only learn a lot, but they would also grow closer as a pair along the way. They’d also be able to declare themselves homeowners while still in their twenties. They wouldn’t even have to make a payment on their house! It would be a huge accomplishment.
There are no grey areas.
We’re convinced you’ll agree with us that Theodore Roosevelt was the finest president America has ever had. If you don’t, please know that we will fight for it. When it came to conquering challenges, he had a few tricks up his sleeve. As a boy, he suffered from asthma, yet went on to become a hero during the Spanish-American War. We’re not sure what else to say if it doesn’t speak for itself!
All he needed to do now was figure out what to say to Cal and Claire. He once claimed that risking great things, even if you fail periodically, is preferable than living in power. “grey twilight that knows neither success nor failure.” We have faith in these two doers to follow in the footsteps of the past President. They’ve never given up, even when they’ve experienced setbacks.
Although there may not be a straight route to fate, we are convinced that if there were justice in the world, their massive risk would pay off handsomely. In bringing these two lovers from various areas of the world together, fate played a role. They’ve now arrived in a third country, where they wanted to start a new chapter in their life together, despite the fact that their journey has taken a far different road than they had anticipated.
Nothing is standing in their way.
We’ll just keep crossing our fingers for them as the process continues, which will take a long time. We hope they never lose their optimism and strive hard to overcome their “fortunate accident,” but we can’t say we’re worried about them. Nothing seems to be able to stop them when they are determined!
Keeping a positive attitude
We’re sure they encountered many frustrating situations along the way. It’ll almost certainly be exhausting. At the very least, we hope they maintain their positive attitude. Fortunately, they’ve remained positive thus far and aren’t letting any obstacles discourage them!
Things will improve.
It might be a lot of hard work, with plenty of stumbling blocks. For one thing, the truck sank at one point under the weight of the bricks. We are optimistic, however, that they will overcome this challenge. Their plans will be carried out in a gradual but steady manner.
The house is falling apart due to its age. They had a lot of trash to get rid of as well. They went to the dump several times to get rid of unclean, nasty, and mouldy goods. Before travelling to the dump, the couple had to fill the vehicle to its utmost capacity. The majority of the artefacts they uncovered in the house are no longer useful, despite their best attempts.
Keep yourself safe.
When working on a project of this magnitude, it’s critical to remember that your safety should always come first (or any project, for that matter). Several variables, particularly when it comes to remodelling, can create risk or harm.
This is why, before coming to work, you must check that you are dressed adequately. Working on a construction site exposes you to smoke, dust, mould, and chemicals. As a result, you must wear your face mask at all times.
Getting Down and Dirty
Furthermore, the pair must be conscious that they must be willing to get their hands filthy if the renovation project is to work. They can buy work gloves to protect their hands from dirt and wounds, thankfully.
To the World Wide Web
They were so ecstatic with their new gloves that they took to Instagram to express how much they adore them. The couple did say, however, that the new gloves would only be good for an hour.
They Deserve Breaks
Despite the enormity of the task ahead of them, the couple was adamant about completing it and not abandoning their ambition of turning the rotting old mansion into their ideal home. It’s a good indicator that they haven’t given up hope in the face of adversity.
A Touch Of Zen We’re also relieved to learn that they make sure the two of them get enough sleep. They also go out with their buddies and have a nice time. They also make it a point to have some fun while working! They are still working on the project at the moment.
